New English reading books

This academic year, our school has made an investment in new books and teaching materials for the English department, funded in part through the Proa+ programme. These new purchases have allowed us to expand and update our English reading collection, ensuring that students have access to engaging, level-appropriate and high-quality resources that support both language development and exam preparation.

Our English Reading Plan is designed to foster regular reading habits while systematically developing students’ linguistic competence. Through a carefully selected range of graded readers, contemporary novels and adapted classics, students are exposed to varied genres and themes that match their level and interests. The reading plan is implemented across different year groups and integrated into the curriculum throughout the school year.

The benefits of reading in a foreign language are well established. Regular reading improves vocabulary acquisition, reinforces grammar structures in context, enhances reading comprehension skills and increases overall language fluency. It also strengthens writing skills and helps students internalise natural language patterns. Beyond linguistic gains, reading promotes critical thinking, cultural awareness and learner autonomy. Our reading programme takes place once a week in each class, with a follow up registration sheet, to assess the everyday progress and improvement. The objectives for our reading programme are clear:

To improve students’ communicative competence in English.
To systematically expand their vocabulary.
To develop reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and inferring meaning from context.
To build confidence in understanding longer and more complex texts.

All these actions are implemented with a clear focus on external language certification. The materials and activities are aligned with the CEFR levels, particularly B1 and B2, helping students gradually acquire the competences required for official certification exams. By strengthening reading comprehension, we prepare our students to successfully meet the demands of B1 and B2 examinations while fostering a lifelong habit of reading in English.
